What is an FUE hair transplant

An FUE hair transplant, or follicular unit extraction, is a medical procedure that moves individual hair follicles from the back and sides of your scalp, where hair is not affected by pattern hair loss, into areas where it has thinned or gone. It is performed under local anaesthetic, usually in one day, and the moved follicles continue to grow as your own hair.

It does not stop hair loss elsewhere. Hair behind a transplanted area can keep receding, which is why the plan matters more than the procedure. Your donor area is finite and it does not renew. Every follicle taken from it is spent, so how it is spent has to be decided before anything moves.

How the follicles are taken

Each follicular unit is extracted individually with a small circular punch, spread across the donor area rather than drawn heavily from one region. There is no strip of scalp removed, which is what separates FUE from the older FUT technique.

How they are put back

Your doctor plans the angle, direction and density first, then places each graft using a precision placement device that creates the site and places the follicle in one motion. Smaller instruments mean less trauma and typically a gentler recovery.

How they are kept alive in between

Between extraction and placement the grafts are out of the scalp. During that window they may be held in Hypothermosol, a medical-grade solution originally developed for organ transplant. Keeping the window short and controlled is part of the plan.

FUE compared with FUT

FUT removes a strip of scalp and leaves a linear scar. FUE leaves small round marks that are usually less visible with short
hair. Gro performs FUE.

Our method

How we perform an FUE hair transplant: Precise Follicle Placement

An FUE hair transplant has two stages. Follicles come out of the donor area, and then they go into the areas being treated. Most of what decides whether a result looks natural happens in the second stage.

Hair does not grow straight out of the scalp. It leaves at an angle that changes across the head, and transplanted hair has to follow it or the result reads as transplanted no matter how many grafts were moved. That angle is set at the moment each follicle is placed, which is why we do it in one motion rather than two. Gro invested more than $500,000 in practitioner training and research and development last year. Placement is the part of this that rewards it.

Precise Follicle Placement is Gro's own approach to the placement stage of an FUE hair transplant. Rather than cutting a recipient site and then placing a follicle into it, your doctor uses a precision placement device that does both in one motion, keeping direct control of the angle, depth and direction of every graft as it goes in.

Stage one: extraction

Each follicular unit is taken individually with a small circular punch, spread across the donor area rather than drawn heavily from one region. No strip of scalp is removed, which is what separates FUE from the older FUT technique. Your donor area is finite and does not renew, so where grafts are taken from is planned before any are.

Stage two: Precise Follicle Placement

Most clinics use a two-step technique: an incision is made first, then a follicle is placed into it. Precise Follicle Placement does both in one motion with a precision placement device, so the angle, depth and direction of each graft are set by the doctor at the moment of placement rather than determined by a site cut beforehand. Smaller instruments mean less trauma to the scalp and typically a gentler recovery.

What the device does not do

It controls placement, not extraction. Extraction is a separate stage, done by hand, and no instrument substitutes for the planning behind it. Precise Follicle Placement is our approach to one part of the procedure, not a different procedure.

Keeping grafts viable in between

Between extraction and placement the grafts are out of the scalp. During that window they may be held in Hypothermosol, a medical-grade solution originally developed for organ transplant procedures, intended to help keep grafts viable. Keeping that window short and controlled is part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Who performs it

The full procedure, Full PFP and FUE, is performed personally by your treating doctor. It is never delegated to a technician. At Gro Auckland that is Dr Leo Chong or Dr Jack Yeoman, and it is the same doctor who confirms your plan with you.

Am I a candidate for a hair transplant?

Suitability depends on the pattern and stage of your hair loss, whether it has stabilised, and the size and quality of your donor area. It is assessed by a doctor, not online and not by an advisor.

What to check, wherever you are looking.

Should I have a hair transplant in New Zealand or overseas?

If you are weighing this up against another New Zealand clinic, or against a package overseas, these are worth knowing before you commit. Donor hair only gets one shot, so it is worth asking the same five things of anywhere you are considering, including us.

Who performs the procedure, and can you look them up?

Every doctor practising in New Zealand appears on the Medical Council of New Zealand public register, along with their scope of practice. Ask for a name and a registration number, then check it yourself.

Is hair the only thing they do?

Some clinics offer hair restoration alongside skin treatments, injectables or a dozen other procedures. Ask whether hair restoration is the doctor's main focus. At Gro, it is the only thing our doctors work on.

How was that number counted?

If a clinic tells you it performs a share of New Zealand's hair transplants, ask where the national total came from. There is no public register of hair transplant procedures in New Zealand, so a percentage of the country cannot be verified by anyone. A clinic's own procedure count, with the method stated, is something you can actually weigh.

What happens after the procedure, and who answers the phone?

Recovery questions arrive after you have gone home. Ask who answers, whether it is the clinic or a call centre, and whether it costs anything. At Gro Auckland it is free follow-up for up to 18 months and a dedicated out-of-hours contact.

Does the plan account for the loss that has not happened yet?

A plan built for how you will look years from now, not just in the first twelve months, is the hardest mistake to undo later. Ask what happens to the result if your hair loss continues behind it.

Some people get good results overseas. What we will say is that your donor
area is finite, it does not renew, and a first plan built for the wrong
horizon is the one thing a second procedure cannot fully repair. If a
correction is needed later, the cost and the follow-up usually sit with you.

Worth saying plainly

Sometimes the best advice we can give isnot to proceed with a hair transplant.

Your donor area is finite, so every follicle needs to be planned carefully. If your hair loss has not stabilised, or a procedure is unlikely to serve you well long term, we will tell you. Sometimes the right outcome is a treatment plan. Sometimes it is knowing when to wait.
