What Causes Scarring During A Hair Transplant?
The manner in which the hair follicles are harvested is responsible for the level of scarring that results from the procedure. Strip procedure, or Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), is a traditional technique where a “strip” of skin is removed from the back of the scalp to be divided into single units that are then transplanted into the treatment area. Scarring from this technique is unavoidable due to the incision and stitches required. Scarring is more prominent if the patient is susceptible to keloid scarring.
Another traditional technique is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), where a punch is used to make a small circular cut in the skin around a hair follicle or group of follicles, removing them from the scalp, leaving a small open hole. Scars form as the open holes heal. The healing process is typically quicker and the scars less visible than FUT, generally taking around 2 weeks to heal.
