Options For Treating Hair Loss

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is a foam or lotion applied twice daily and can be used to slow down or prevent hair loss. It works in most cases, but it can irritate the scalp, making it itchy or inflamed.

Finasteride (Propecia) is a pill that has been very successful in slowing hair loss and can also stimulate new hair growth. You can get better results if you use Minoxidil and Finasteride together, but once you start, you need to continue the treatment. If you stop, you will start losing hair again.

Hair transplants are the only truly permanent solution to hair loss. Healthy hair follicles are taken from areas of the scalp that aren’t affected by hair loss and are implanted where they are needed. The two common methods of harvesting hair follicles are:

1) Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) – donor hair follicles are removed in a long thin strip of scalp and divided into single units under a microscope. The site where the scalp is removed is then sewn back together.

2) Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – a punch is used to make a small circular cut in the skin around a hair follicle or group of follicles, removing them from the scalp leaving a small open hole.

The problem with these two methods is the scarring caused by the follicle extraction, which increases recovery time and may be visible under short hair. The other problem is that the extensive handling of the hair follicles in preparing them for transplantation reduces their survival. This means that many more follicles need to be implanted to get make sure that there are enough to achieve the required results.

The Gro Difference

Gro pioneered the FUE method, but we were unhappy with the survival rates of the implanted hairs. There were several factors at play: how the follicles were extracted, how they were treated while waiting for transplant and how they were implanted.

We designed new tools with smaller diameters (less than 1mm) to help reduce the damage to the follicles during extraction and implantation. This means the follicles are more likely to ‘take’ in their new location due to a tighter fit in the skin. We also keep the follicles in a special growth solution (HypoThermosolTM), at a constant temperature of 4°C, to keep them healthy while they are waiting to be implanted.

In reducing how much the follicles are handled between extraction and implantation, and providing optimum conditions for survival outside the body, we have increased our follicle survival rate to an exceptionally high level.
